My nephew recently got a bachelor pad of his own and I will be sure to pass this on to him! A Peanut!

TGIF!!! Yes, that's the right time of my blog today/tonight...Central Standard time...12:27 a.m.! Early morn and still no sleep. Will dread the rest of the day as it drags....especially at work as I have a 2:00 meeting right after lunch and you know what that means.

So, last weekend my niece went on a conference trip with her college to Abilene and so being the good aunt that I am, I gave her some munchies to take on the road. Some good old fashioned GARP trail mix that I used to make in my camping days. The trail mix consists of peanuts, milk chocolate pieces and raisins. The peanuts were from a spicy thai mix and from the good folks at Planters but I forgot to tell my niece there were some spicy ones in the mix. So earlier tonight, I saw she had the half eaten bag on her bed and I asked her how the munchies were? She chuckles and tells me that the peanuts are bad that's why she didn't eat them all. I started laughing and telling her about the mix to which she replied (as she held a peanut in her hand), "I knew there was something different about you"! Hence my blog tonight! Oh well guess you had to be there.

Ok, I really need to get some sleep! Way past my bedtime and I'm working on Saturday too but thankfully no more Sundays! Good news in that they cut back my hours of which I'll miss the extra money but welcome the extra time!

For Friday funnies...

Yesterday I had a flat tire on the interstate. So I ease my car over to the shoulder of the road, carefully, get out of the car and open the trunk. I took out 2 cardboard men, unfolded them and stood them at the rear of my car facing oncoming traffic. They look so life like you wouldn't believe it! They are in trench coats exposing their nude bodies and private parts to the approaching drivers. To my surprise, cars start slowing down looking at my life like men. And of course, traffic starts backing up. Everybody is tooting their horns and waving like crazy. It wasn't long before a state trooper pulls up behind me. He gets out ofhis car and starts walking toward me. I could tell he was not a happy camper! 'What's going on here?''My car has a flat tire', I said calmly. 'Well, what the hell are those obscene cardboard men doing here by the road?' I couldn't believe that he didn't know. So I told him, 'Hellooooo, those are my emergency flashers!'

Ever have one of those days?! I had one of these on Friday. I almost lost it. I was feeling frazzled and harried but thank goodness lunch time came around and I took a quick drive to the park and back to work I went to finish out the day. I worked Saturday but am sooo glad to have the holiday off....I was living for MLK day. Today was a low-key gorgeous day but household chores beckoned as well as watching the playoffs. Go CARDS!

Tips for a Better Life – 2009

This Exotic Angel plant called my name yesterday and he was on clearance for $1.00. I happily brought him home to be my chosen plant for 2009. Within the dirt are the cut up pieces of my letter for the new year that lists my dreams, hopes and desires for 2009. More info about plant here. I knew nothing about this plant when I bought it but I love the explanation which fits me to a tee in the description of home decor: eclectic.

Last night I had a ceremonial smudge which celebrates "in with the new and out with the old" that includes a letter in reference to the past year. In the the letter I offer healing and hope to myself and for others and ask for forgiveness to those that I've hurt in the past year. This is my fourth year to do so and I look forward to the quiet time before celebrating the new year.

Casual morn on this last day of the year. My neighbors gave me some grapefruit from their tree and I made some fresh squeezed juice to make my own concoction of grapefruit, orange, some bottled apple juice and cranberry juice as well as adding some blueberries. As you can see I didn't bother to take the seeds out...to much trouble. Quite tasty and no, no alcohol--not yet at least. Maybe just a glass of bubbly tonight. My friend is house sitting and we're having a low key dinner, playing a game of scrabble, watching Dick Clark's New Years' eve party from NYC and calling it a night. We're both broke but such is life! Happy New Year to you and yours. Be safe out there. Here's to 2009!

Funny in that my mom didn't put up a tree this year but she has all the gifts-wrapped already. I have the tree and I have no gifts under the tree. I usually don't start wrapping till Christmas Eve anyway. The tree needs more lights, IMHO and is barren at the top. There was another tree that I had my eye on but it was already spoken for. BTW, I was at a Kroger supermarket yesterday and they were giving away trees-FREE! I almost brought one home to put in the backyard. I remember one Christmas, years ago I was heading to the Medical Center to pick up my roomate then and cars were dodging something in the road and when it came my turn to veer to the left, there was this Christmas tree that fell off the back of somebody's car. I pulled over to move the tree out of the road and then I realized, heck why not bring it home. It was a beautiful high end tree valued around $70. Imagine paying that kind of money, getting home and realizing the tree is not there!? My roomie and I were moving into a condo that late December and there wasn't much in the condo at the time but that beautiful tree. Before she headed home for the holidays we put a fire in the fireplace, popped some popcorn and decorated the tree. It was pretty barren but it was a beautiful tree. We had fun laughing, singing Christmas carols and decorating that tree.

Word of the day...

Last night while driving home in the fog and mist, I text message (while waiting at the red light) my niece to "be careful driving because it was masty". I actually meant to type nasty but was in a hurry because I was sitting at the light. She said her and co-workers just laughed at that. As my niece was driving home, she had her windows down and for some reason there was just a bad smell all around Houston and so she texted me to tell me it was "smasty"....S for smelly, M for misty and 'asty" for nasty and thus she came up with a new word-SMASTY! We went and did some quick Christmas shopping after she got home and while driving around we were just cracking up at the word. A goofy evening we had!

We just got done having our office holiday luncheon complete with a white elephant Christmas gift exchange and someone made the comment that, "crappy wrapped gifts are the best gifts". Note to self...always go for the crappy wrapped gifts! ;-)

Another sleepless night here in Htown, which kind of goes with the foul mood I was in earlier yesterday afternoon. For months I had been planning a long awaited vacation to New Mexico...specifically Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I was going to attend the Ottmar Liebert Concert in Rio Rancho and meet up with two fellow fanmencas... Desert Diva/Cheryl and Linda but the show was cancelled! Even as early as Saturday morn we were eagerly making plans to meet up on Thursday and take in the spirit of the season by spending time in Santa Fe. Then the ball dropped and talk about major dissappointment and now major "bah humbug" and I think I speak for Cheryl and Linda as well. All weekend I was in denial about the cancellation but the final blow came when I cancelled my flight Monday afternoon. Thankfully, Southwest Airlines gave me a refund credit for future travel so yeah for Southwest but boo for Rio Rancho and the venue that cancelled the concert. Needless to say my Christmas Spirit has all but dissappeared, gone! Not to mention that I am now going to work Thursday and Friday of this week as well. I was all set for an early holiday vacation!

in the Rivera fam...minus my mom who was on the phone. This may well be the last Thanksgiving at my parent's home as they are looking to sell their home and move to Katy. We've been doing Thanksgiving at my mom's for many, many years--except for those years when we headed to Corpus Christi. My parents' have lived in their home for well over 45 years. We'll see what the next year brings. I will miss having them "around the corner" (more or less) from me but the house is getting to be too much for dad to take care of with his illness-Parkinsons. He's been very reluctant to sell the house because of so many memories but the house needs lots of work and sadly it might be a tear down. Lots of changes coming around in the near future. Some good and some not so good. See the boys here.

First vacation day starts off with meditation something that I hadn't been doing in quite a while. Got to enjoy a nice bowl of "Honey Bunches of Oats" and now listening to Up Close-the Binaural Sessions. It's so nice to not have to rush off to work and take in the morning light in the house, which is one of the reasons I fell in love with my house.

The photo is from my front porch planter. The flowers are left over from a few weeks back and were getting wilted but instead of throwing them into the trash, I de-stemmed them and tossed them in the planter where they have brought color into my world over and over again. So here's to pushing daisies!

Unfortunately, yes I do and it has to do with my parakeets who are now outside in the back porch. They are inside their cage, which is encased in another 4 foot iron cage to protect them from outside predators...i.e., cats! Still, the cats tend to prowl the late night and stir up the birds. This in turn has awaken me in a panic from my sleep, and I rush to the window to peek out and make sure they're ok.

List three foods you can’t stand:

Hmm, I wish there were more than I can't stand because then I might be a little thinner

but oysters, liver, and vienna sausages are definitely a turn off!

Official Bike Ride!

My first ""official" bike ride. My nephew/Greg and I joined others with Bike Barn of Houston on their "Day of the Dead" tour. It was only supposed to be two hours but ended up being more like 4 because of so many riders. We had a police escort along the entire tour, which was nice.

One thing I forgot to bring during the bike ride last night was a camera. We toured some interesting sights and I managed to capture this one on my cameraphone. There were so many bikers there that it was impossible to walk the cemetery and it was dark-very dark--even with our bike lights. I never knew this cemetery exisisted and would love to return--but in daylight!

I really enjoyed the bike ride and thanks to my nephew for pushing me to go. I just bought the bike last week and still getting used to riding on it and wasn't sure if I was ready for such a run that was supposed to last two hours. Last Sunday I rode out to the bayou from my house which was a little over 1/2 an hour and I was tired--especially in the last 10 minutes.

Kudos again to my nephew as he is training for the MS150 next year and was such a cutie in his new biker shorts. I meant to get a picture of him as well. Because of our new interest in biking he and I have developed a closer bond with one another and I look forward to other bike rides together.

I am hooked on this song! I first heard it when I was getting a massage last month and it's been in repeat mode at work, home, and car. During the massage I was up in the clouds moving to this song and for the first time I finally saw the full spectrum of the chakra colors but the violet hues were all around me carrying and moving me in ways I had never experienced before. I didn't want to come back down from that --whatever that was!

Life lately, has been moving at the speed of sound. At work we are moving to our new building and since hurricane Ike, Houstonians have been on the move getting this and that done and cleaned up. I just bought a new bike and I love the way it moves me from here to there. During my meditations, I can't stop moving or at least my body is moving/vibrating to the chanting. A new season is upon us and yesterday afternoon after work, I was sitting in the backyard and watching all the moving. Leaves falling, squirrels moving their fall harvest from different spots, birds hurriedly flying south for the winter and butterflies moving from garden to garden for that last taste of sweet succulence. Here's to Mother Nature and her message to us that even though circumstances may be dire (economy) life is moving! So look up to the clouds and move to the dance of life.

Another weekend came and went with most of it spent working. Working the extra job to try and get ahead but with the economy tanking I wonder how much am I really getting ahead and if all this time working is worth it. There's so much that I miss doing. I have cut back a bit more than usual though as I'm now rotating my Saturday's off just to give me a break! I did treat myself to a massage yesterday and it was much needed as my therapist was having to work extra to get all the kinks out of my body. I was so excited to finally have a free evening of doing nothing and was looking forward to watching the baseball playoff game between Boston and Tampa Bay BUT was so dissappointed to learn that the game was on CABLE! I hate CABLE! NO FAIR!

FINALLY! The lights came on after being in the dark for over 14 days! I'd be lying if I didn't say that my patience was wearing thin. Desperation and depression were starting to set in, yet I tried not to complain because I know others had lost so much more than mere power in the aftermath of Ike. Houston was long overdue for the "Big One" and we finally got hit and hit hard. Though others more than some.
Power was restored on Saturday morning just after 8:00. I wasn't home but my niece was and called to tell me the good news. I got home from work just after 3:00 and never realized how bright light can be especially when it's coming from your house! We take so much for granted! I celebrated the evening with Bacardi Limon on the rocks.
Last night was my first real night of sleep in about two weeks. The dark of night with its heat and humidity can make for many stressful, sleepless nights. It was heaven to wake up at 9:00 a.m and see my ceiling fan blowing, hear the AC cranking and the coffee brewing. Hallelujah indeed!

Hurricane Ike-Lessons Learned Pt. 1

1. Coffee and frozen pizzas can be made on a BBQ grill. Hmmm, I hadn't tried this one!
2. No matter how many times you flick the switch, lights don't work without electricity. I finally stopped flipping light switches three days after the storm.
3. My car gets 23.21675 miles per gallon, EXACTLY (you can ask the people in line who helped me push it). Thank goodness, I had a full tank of gas and didn't have to resort to this.
4. Kids can survive 4 days or longer without a video game controller in their hand. Don't have any kids so not sure on this one but sure do miss the mouse on my computer!
5. Cats are even more irritating without power. No cats here, just my Chi and thankful for his company on these powerless nights.
6. He who has the biggest generator wins. Yep, this one is right on the money!
7. Be nice to your neighbors, you may need to borrow their utilities some day. Absolutely!
8. A new method of non-lethal torture- showers without hot water. Again, this one didn't apply to me.
9. There are a lot more stars in the sky than most people thought. Yes, there are! I just wish the mosquitos would go away so we could enjoy the views.
10. TV is an addiction and the withdrawal symptoms are painful. I can do without TV, but having to live without internet has been painful.
11. A 7 lb bag of ice will chill 6-12 oz Drinks to a drinkable temperature in 11 minutes, and still keep a 14 lb. turkey frozen for 8 more hours. No turkeys in my ice chest!
12. There are a lot of dang trees around here! Lots of trees sure got a wacking thanks to Mother Nature and the winds of Hurricane Ike.
13. Flood plain drawings on some mortgage documents were seriously wrong. Thankfully, this did not apply to me--this time BUT I am going to buy flood insurance very soon!
14. Aluminum siding, while aesthetically pleasing, is definitely not required. I'll hang onto my wood shingles for sure!
15. Crickets can increase their volume to overcome the sound of 14 generators. I wish I could hear the crickets....all I've heard is dogs barking incessantly!
16. People will get into a line that has already formed without having any idea what the line is for. Especially at Home Depot and Lowes!
17. When required, a Lincoln Continental will float, doesn't steer well but floats just the same.
18. Tele-marketers function no matter what the weather is doing. My phone didn't work for the longest time and so I missed on these guys!
19. Cell phones work when land lines are down, but only as long as the battery remains charged. Keeping mine charged was a challenge!
20. 27 of your neighbors are fed from a different transformer than you, and they are quick to point that out! Still waiting for any neighbor in my area to have power!
21. If my store sold only ice, chainsaws, gas and generators... I'd be rich. Need to add batteries to the list!
22. Price of a can of soup rises 200% in a storm. No soup here! Too darn hot!
23. Tree service companies are under appreciated. I wisely invested $$ months ago for tree service in my backyard!
24. I learned what happens when you make fun of another states' blackout.
25. MATH 101: 30 days in a month, minus 6 days without power equals 30% higher electric bill ? ???? Sad but true, this morning's paper stated that the power company will most likely raise prices to makeup for what they've lost!
26 Drywall is a compound word, take away the "dry" part and it's worthless.
27. I can walk a lot farther than I thought.
28. Vienna Sausage is only part of the major food groups during a Hurricane. NO VS for me!
29. According to the scale, calories consumed during a Hurricane do indeed count. For reals!



The above was sent to me via email! Yes, finally getting around to answering emails, flickring, and catching up on the happenings of the past week and a half. Day 11 and still no power. Thus, Lessons Learned from Hurricane Ike to be continued on Part 2.

Question: Do you have any recommendations for pets? Our dog is an outside dog, and I don't want him to leave a brownie on my carpet. Can I tie him to a tree? We are in the Woodlands if this helps...

Reply: I'd try to at least bring him in the garage if you can. Would you want to be tied to a tree during a hurricane?

As we prepare for hurricane Ike, all of us along the Gulf Coast wait in high anticipation--of the unknown. I'd by lying if I'd said I wasn't worried but trying to remain calm. Earlier today, I came across this and couldn't stop laughing!!! I can't believe someone actually would think of tieing up a dog up to a tree during a hurricane.

Chulo's crate is ready to go! In fact, I have two crates packed! I guess the above dog owner has never heard of a crate!

I needed a whole bottle tonight to take away my frustrations of the day...mainly from the idiot who hit my car today! It was nothing major-so far and thank goodness it was not my fault. Even more disheartening was that I had just left my massage therapists' office. So much for the wonderful day I was having. It's been one of those weeks! Very much looking forward to the holiday weekend but now another worry...another hurricane possibly heading our way! I think that calls for another trip to liquor store to stock up on more wine!

Wine glass empty again! Need to go out and get another bottle or two but so tired AND restless. Made it through another week of registration at work but 2nd week is taking its toll AND I found out that I"m working tomorrow/Sunday. Still trying to unwind from working today. On the other hand, the paychecks will be nice and the money will definitely come in handy as I've still got some unfinished projects on the house. Listening to music by Ottmar has been a welcomed reprieve.

The dog days of summer are upon us with August here. The heat and humidity have been oppressive but we're getting a nice reprieve today thanks to the storm.



Ok, time to light some more candles, turn off the 'puter off, pump up the volume, brew some afternoon tea and get on a tear of cleaning out some of this clutter in my computer room. Hopefully the rain will let up a bit this eve as I'd like to take a quick walk around the neighborhood.

World Youth Day

I remember when I attended the first World Youth Day in Rome some 24 years ago and then again in Denver some 15 years back....


It all began with John Paul II’s love for young people. On Palm Sunday of 1984, the Pope convoked the youth of Rome to celebrate with him the Holy Year of Redemption: their answer was enthusiastic and surpassed all expectations. There were over 250,000 youth from around the world attending this event.

I was a Youth Counselor then and one of the group leaders on the trip to Rome and Denver. Each event included 7 days of activities for the attendees. It was something to experience and behold.

Water of the Nile was the inspiration for the this beautiful table created by Dan Axton. The flooring was salvaged and the shower door was recycled. This was the first creation by Dan and he plans to design additional tables to be sold, and yes he is taking requests. As you can see this is a one of a kind, unique design. The wood was salvaged by hand, piece by piece from an old farm house in an East Houston neighborhood now known as Pecan Park. This wood is old "Heart Pine", which can no longer be found naturally unless salvaged or bought (expensive). The Golden Mean/Ratio of 61.8% was measured precisely in the height and width with exact measurements of 1.68%. Additional photos can be found here. Btw, Happy Birthday to my mom!

Happy 56th Birthday George! George Strait is one of my favorite famous George's from Texas. Don't get me started on the other famous two! Strait is the King of Swing in Country Music and is cowboy cool! He just topped the charts with his 56th number one hit, "I Saw God Today". Years ago I used to work a part-time job at the old Astrodome and that's how I got hooked on Strait's music. I've been a fan ever since. 56 never looked so good! ;-) Thanks to Mario for wonderful photo and memory of George when we went to rodeo last year.

Bravo Erika for such a nice photo and the fantasy! Sometimes, I do feel like Alice in Wonderland when I pull up to the house. It's the little things that make it special, like fresh cut grass, cutting a magnolia flower from my tree and taking it to the office. The morning sunlight in my room--especially on a Saturday when I don't have to rush off somewhere. The lovely walks around the neighborhood and the enchanting bike rides making new discoveries on every turn of another street. Though, I"ve only been here just under two months in some ways it feels longer. Sometimes, I pinch myself just to make sure I'm not dreaming! Although at times the nightmares can be scary like last week with the work in the attic which is still a work in progress and I have to remember to be patient, sit back and enjoy! Even the unwanted little bumps and bruises. Yes, I have been given much and I am so grateful! Alice does live here!

RETARDED GRANDPARENTS

After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the following: We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They usedto live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Florida .

Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They
ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they don't know who
they are anymore. They go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed
because it is all okay now, they do exercises there, but they don't do them
very well. There is a swimming pool too, but they all jump up and down in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches
all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in
their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same
thing every night --- early birds. Some of the people can't get out past the man
in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked
center for pot luck. My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my
retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out,
so they can visit their grandchildren. .....

I went in for a much needed Reiki massage and afterwards walked out a Princess of Light. About 30 minutes into the session this immense white light appeared above me. It was angelic and so divine that I was overtaken with emotion for the rest of the session. I had not seen such a bright light in awhile. I soo wanted to follow that light but knew that it was only gracing me with its powerful presence for just that moment in time.

4/24/08 Update: The word balance has creeped into the word of the day again as I read an excerpt from Daily Om... As we build a relationship with our power, and follow it, we begin to see that we don’t always have to do what we’re being asked to do by others, and we don’t have to jump on every trend. All we have to do is have the confidence to listen to our own voice and let it guide us as we make our own decisions in life and remember the necessity for balance.
I believe that light I saw on Tuesday was my inner power intertwined with a higher power lifting me out of my body for but a moment. It served as a guide to nurture my soul towards my renewed path of balance that is lacking and surely needed in the coming days and months ahead.
