my niece Erika took this photo today and it's one of my favorites of the two of them. Parents have been married 55 years and one of the sweet things I remember is that mom & dad always held their hands together-in good times and in bad. If you ask the two of them how they stayed together after all these years they will telll you it was their faith in eachother and in God.

Lots to rant and rave about with the closing of 2011 & the beginning of 2012. Naysayers spell doom (financial or otherwise) for 2012 but I am always optimistic that His light will be the beacon even in our darkest hours. The past few years have been like walking in a fog at times blinded by mistrust, miscommunication & misconceptions. One word that comes to mind for me and my hope for 2012 is CLARITY. Clarity in the path I walk along. Happy New Year to your and yours.

Nice article with photos about a once very popular mall here in town and where I spent a good portion of my childhood. It was some kind of place and I do remember the History clock and for the longest I thought it was whimsically magical. I don't remember the grocery store mentioned in the article but I do remember the eating place at the Walgreens and seeing fireworks over the 4th of July.

Another funny story, when my brother & I were very young, I used to convince him to hide from my parents all the time until one night they decided to get us back by conveniently getting lost themselves. Of course they had talked to the security guard and he was in cahoots with their idea of teaching us a lesson. He was saying that if they didn't come and get us by the time he finished locking up the place he would have to take us downtown. Naturally, the panic mode kicked in and then my brother started bawling and told the cop it was my stupid idea in the first place to play hide & seek with my parents. The smarty pants in me though grabbed my brother by the hand and walked out to see if the car was still there to which it was and so they got busted or rather we got busted and I learned my lesson.

Forward now to the present and I cannot tell you the last time I went to that mall. Of course, sadly the area has changed and has become downtroadden. Still, there are many wonderful memories.

from of course Ottmar Liebert of whom most of you all well know I am a die hard fan of and who is performing tonight at Dosey Doe in the Woodlands. Yes, a bit of a chuckle because one wouldn't normally associate flamenco fusion with country but this is a nouveau cafe/concert venue if you will! ;-) Frankly, I've lost count of the many times I've seen him perfrom from Houston to Austin, to New Mexico, to Portland, Oregon and to Seattle. There are many more places I would love to travel and catch one of his performances across the country and globe for that matter.

With this endless, scortching heat & humidity, I really haven't ventured out much other than to work, visiting the family and such but looking forward to a lovely evening out and some wonderful music.

...here it is Sunday morning having just gotten back from the Woodlands and I am tired but not sleepy. Still in a dreamy state of mind after seeing the Snakecharmer perform. A magical night of music. I was transported into another dimension and lost track of time. Seeing Ottmar brought back memories from Seattle and Santa Fe and meeting some of the other "fanmencos" for the first time and seeing Ottmar perform. Kym & I immediately bonded and became sisters! I fully believe that in another lifetime we were! Right, sis! ;-)

The old Astrodome was once nicknamed the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and back in the late 80's, I started working part-time. At that time I was working in a bank and heard they needed some extra help for the upcoming rodeo. That first year I was sent to work in the Souvenir room some 3 or 4 floors below ground. I called it the dungeon then as it was always hot, dark and damp and there I was counting the money coming in from souvenir sales. It was hard work and lasted into the wee hours of the morning but towards the end of the night there was always Tony coming to ask, "how's my gal" doing? Thankfully, he'd lend a helping hand--otherwise I would've been there all night. I ended working some 10+ years off and on through college but thankfully got moved up a few floors to the other money room and Tony was my boss all those years. After I graduated from college, I was glad to say goodbye to that part-time job but over the years Tony & I remained friends. He was from New York & my roomate at the time was also from NY so there was a common bond there. Plus, he had no family here in Houston and so we'd meet once a month for breakfast and did so up until about two years ago when he became ill & ended up finally moving back to New York. This morning I got an email telling me of his passing at the age of 76. He had a series of strokes & other ailments and died Saturday morning. This morning as I was driving into work, I passed the old Astrodome & thought of Tony with tears welling up but as my friend said, "he's in a better place". This photo of the scoreboard brought back some fond memories & of an enduring friendship. Rest in Peace Tony. Thanks to mrp1001 for use of his photo.

BTW, one of the last events I worked at the Astrodome was the 1992 Republican convention. Tony chose me because he knew I was clean-meaning I would pass FBI clearance and was off that summer from college. I remember there were three checkpoints we had to go through with our work badges and such. It was something indeed to work and witness--despite political differences Tony and I had.

I took the photo then as it was always one of my favorite flowers and told myself that whenever I got my own garden I would be sure to add this beauty. I was smiling as I was watering the plant today. I'll have to get some photos up soon.

So today was "Bike to Work" day here in Houston after after some 2+ years of riding my bike and saying I was "gonna ride my bike to work one day"...I finally did it! My drive into work is about a 12 mile ride in by freeway & without traffic can be done in about 20 minutes. My trek by bike took about an hour each way and there was a steady wind blowing that I was fighting but at least I can say I did it! Don't know that it's something I would do everyday like my co-worker Gail does--especially in the brutal heat of the summer.

I had to pack light and bring a change of clothes, soap & washcloth in which to make myself presentable for the workday. Thank goodness, I had washed my hair that morn, & moused it while wet & rewet it again before walking into the office.

There were a few points that had me nervous--especially getting past the very busy Medical Center but overall the ride was o.k. I didn't wear my usual padded bike pants so to say the least my behind is a bit sore and my knee is getting ready to be iced before calling it a night. Maybe sometime in the fall I will make the trek again but for now, I'm back to commuting by car.

in the neighborhood-of Hardin, Texas that is-which is about an hour outside of Houston. A friend of a friend hosts the yearly crawfish boil out on their property in the country, which makes for a wonderful day to sit outside on some lawn chairs, enjoy some fresh country air drinking, eating and mixing & mingling. This batch was the first and each one thereafter gets spicier and spicier but ohhhh sooooo tasty and yes messy! Thanks Jane for the invite and to Stacy & Robert for the hospitality.

Reason for the photo is really the frog on the right! It's been soooo dry here and we've had little rain. In the evening when I water my garden, I hear the happy tune he sings as he takes off but I never knew from where he came. Until, I moved the moon to the other side and there he was! Not sure who was more startled-him or me? He stayed long enough for me to take this photo and off he went into the garden. We crossed paths again earlier this evening.

Ok, yeah in my dreams! My big project for Spring Break was getting my meditation garden done. New landscaping completed, weeds pulled, new flowers planted and finished adding mulch today. The past year was filled with wonder and surprises both dark and full of light. With a new year there is always much anticipation and more fittingly opportunity. Still, one can easily get lost in the darkness of clouds that tend to follow us by our own hand and at the hands of others. It was very cloudy at the beach yesterday as have been the past few months but amidst the rough waters I still felt a sense of peace, renewal, hope and more importantly wonder.

I remember years back, I had a student comment to me in my office
when he saw my Buddha on the bookshelf...
"Shame on you, you worship Buddha"
all the while shaking his finger at me.
My response to him was first of all.
"I am free to worship whomever I want"
and second of all the statute was a gift from a student
We may not agree with all religions and all their teachings but
we should nonetheless respect their beauty, grace and reverence.

The Buddha, a special Guardian, and the Virgin May are just a few of the statues that grace my meditation garden.

This past Saturday, I joined the Houston Bicycle Club on their annual evening Holiday bike tour through the streets of downtown and over to the neighborhood fest of, "Lights in the Heights". Riders (myself included) dressed up their bikes with Christmas lights and decorations. What a fun night! Despite a roaring cold front that came blowing during our ride, the evening was such as blast. The photo is taken at the porch of my co-worker Gail who hosted a party for the bikers. BTW, she bikes to work almost everyday. Sadly, though I didn't take any photos of my bike. I still have all the lights hooked up and will try and get some in a few days. I'm eager to take the bike out again and ride around the neighborhood the next couple of nights. Anyone want to join me? BYOB! Get it?!

These flowers in my garden had been transplanted, and the night before it poured rain whereby splashing some more dirt onto the petals. So not only did the rain come down but it's making brand new ground in my backyard-especially since my Japanese elm was taken down. It's always good to let the rain come down and make a brand new ground. BTW, congrats to Sara for her Grammy nomination. Her music is so fresh and I have certainly worn out the new CD.

Mood: Mellow-thanks to the wine, Las Rocas-Garnacha (Spain). Viva Espana!

Here we are in October and fall has finally arrived-somewhat. It was a long, hot summer and my favorite month has arrived. I can come out of hibernation now! ;-) In September, my camera bit the dust and I ended up purchasing another cheap Fuji and here is the end result. I so wanted a Nikon and almost gave in but have to keep expenses down.

Been taking advantage of the nicer weather and sitting outside and soaking in the feel of the north wind, which is exhilarating, especially at night. Sitting under the stars by candlelight with the burning of incense--it's become my quiet time before going to bed. Soon, I can light up the chiminea! Next week lows are supposed to be in the 50's! Bring it on!

Check! On sale at Whole Foods and sign read, "fresh from New Mexico"! ;-) They are quite tasty this year. Roasted just one over fire and enjoyed it w/some black beans and chicken. The scent of fire roasted chile did permeate throughout my house last night..."the Scent of Hatch"! ;-) I just might have to roast another one tonight over fire and enjoy it with a burger as I still remember the green eyed monster from last summer. My mouth is salivating as I type this!

Thanks Michael for the idea. Tropical storm Hermine brought dark clouds and heavy rain making it hard to see the light but here it was in my own backyard. BTW, wouldn't mind the rain, if only it would bring cooler weather. Can't wait to kiss summer (with all its heat, humidity) goodbye!

This dragonfly actually moved their head to look at me while I was trying to take the photo. I thought for sure it would fly away but thankfully it decided to stay put-thus an acknowledgement of prescence- an embrace if you will between living beings-dragonfly and human. After taking the photo, I thanked him for sharing his beauty. In looking back through photos I found this taken by Cheryl from 2007 and around the same location...same dragonfly!? Someone turned up the volume at House of Blues last night as Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra were in the house. The band was jumping! Michael Chavez-drummer was on fire. What a difference from two weeks ago in Portland. Must be something about a Saturday nite crowd. An electrifying and intoxicating evening indeed.

I went with my friends Kim & Jhon and we were celebrating her 50th birthday. She called this morning to thank me for such a wonderful evening of music and friendship and an even bigger thank you for her surprise gift- CD - Petals on the Path, which Ottmar graciously personalized and autographed. Thank you Ottmar! Kim's husband commented that she's been on cloud 9 since last night, said she's been "Dancing Alone" to the music...even in her sleep! ;-)

We were already making plans for the next time Ottmar comes to town but might prove to be difficult since they might be moving in the fall. Nonetheless, memories from last night will always be there.

Back from my Oregon vacation that began in Portland, followed by a scenic drive down the beautiful Oregon coast, then over to Eugene and back up to Portland. Here I am in heaven...High atop highway 101 @ West Shelter, Cape Perpetua (Day Use) where on a clear day one can see over 70 miles of coastline.

This past weekend, I went to a Garden Party-my own! Another phase in the projects list is done. My house has been transformed again complete with new landscape including bricks, new plants, mulch and more mulch. I went for the exotic look to include bamboo, bird of paradise, pineapple guava, plumeria, and philodendron just to name a few of the many plants added. Thanks again to Dan for his landscape design and three days of backbreaking work in 100+ degree weather in order to make my dream a reality.

So here ends another month and summer is knocking on the door loud and clear. I can't say that I love summers-especially here in Texas with the awful heat and humidity. Usually, I go into hibernation but trying to force myself to get out more and exercise. Chulo and I have taken to walking again after I get back from my bike ride. The bike has been calling my name more of late and it is nice to feel the wind on my face-what littler there is these days. Thankfully the rains have been somewhat steady this past month and with it come dark clouds with very nice breezy winds.
There are a few nice things I am looking forward to this summer. June brings the release of Ottmar Liebert's new CD-POP/Petals on the Path. July brings another week of vacation and seeing an Ottmar Liebert concert at House of Blues and in August, Lilith Fair stops by at the Cynthia Woods Mitchel Pavillion.
The next three months will seem like an eternity but I only have to look back at how fast the last three months have flown.

BTW, today was Memorial Day and I never forget this special day for all our veterans and always remember that some gave all.

stopped by the old house to pick up some last minute items from parent's old house, which already is being remodeled as the kitchen walls were all torn up. WOW, that was tough to swallow and as I was leaving, I thanked the Man upstairs for all the blessings that were received in that home. Many plants and flowers didn't survive the freeze but mom's azaleas were in full bloom and snapped this photo as I was leaving and admittedly with a tear in my eye. I've been sad ever since pulling out of the driveway this afternoon. I sure wish I could have brought this plant back with me to my house. Believe me, I tried but it just wasn't budging.

I came home for lunch today and Chulo and I were sitting on the patio and watching all the activity. I hope the love birds like their new home and I'm glad they feel welcomed. Aerial view of my new patio. Earth and equinox influences the design resembling that of a plaza complete with Mexican River Rock and concrete stepping stones. Old patio was 11 x 6 and new patio 13 x 13, which equal a lucky number. Patio was completed in time for the Spring Equinox, March 20th. A ceremonial burial of sage and burning of incense was celebrated before the completion of the patio for continued blessings upon my home. The first day of spring is when the sun crosses into Aries, which is the sun sign of the designer-Dan Axton, who was also the designer of my patio table. Months ago, I told Dan-the handy man that I wanted a new patio and we talked about different ideas and then he came up with this design on paper. Well, needless to say the design looks much better than was what was imagined (by me) on paper. While I was busy moving my parents to their new home he spent five days working on the patio as he meticulosly worked on the right dimensions of width, depth and exact leveling in digging the 13 x 13 swatch of yard for the patio. As you can see the result is a uniquely designed patio that fits my taste and appreciation for a welcoming place in which I can recharge my body and soul as well as entertain. Speaking of entertaining--anybody up for some margaritas? Welcome to Plaza Azul.

for "Mom and Dad". They traded their old home of 45 years for a new and updated condo in Katy. Downsizing to a two bedroom, one car gargage has been a challenge though. Still, they are now just around the corner from my brother where there are five pairs of hands to help out with their needs. Now, I will be the one who will have to commute about 30 miles to visit but thanks to the new Westpark Tollway, time spent on the road has been minimized by 15 minutes. My father is loving his new garage door opener! ;-) Planning for the move was more than two years in the making. I will certainly miss having them around the corner but the change was needed as my father's Parkinson's illness is progressing. Now for a big garage sale this weekend! After wards, final cleaning and closing the door on the last chapter of our childhood home but Spring time brings new beginnings and promises for our family.

Lately, I have felt like I've been on a crazy train at full speed ahead and definitely looking to get off but not till after Sunday, once my parent's move into their new home.
